re planting to replace ivy, I'd suggest clearing ivy from an area for a year and seeing what grows in it's place first before planting anything.

Binz! Brilliant...checked it out and the area (at least up to 1902 from 1822) is clearly not woodland, so my guess is that it was just abandoned when the last owner bought it. That might explain the few daffodils that are there (not native species) and the gooseberry bush...I'll clear a spot of ivy and see what happens...
