felling licence

Paperwork, grants, legal issues

Postby Darren » Tue Mar 23, 2010 10:10 pm

My felling license comes to a end at the end of the month. I'm look at the exceptions http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/treefellingaugust.pdf/$FILE/treefellingaugust.pdf and wondering if I need to apply for a license.

Does exemptions include 5 cubic meters of any diameter size tree per calendar quarter?

Yes it does. 5 cubic metres is a lot of wood - a builder's skip.

Thanks James.

I doubt that I'll produce more than 5 cubic metres in a quarter as I work on my own for a couple of days a week. Should save me a load of working out how much unthinned Spruce will come to in cubic metres, producing plans etc........

The present quarter ends March 31st so if you jump to it you can do another 5 cubic metres from 1st April!

As far as I understand it, you can cut as much as you like provided the stem diameter is below 75mm at breast height or 100m if thinning for woodland management. These are maiden trees but if you are coppicing I think you are allowed up to 150mm before you have to start worrying about felling licences. It is only dimensions above these that count towards the 5 cubic metre limit. Although no doubt someone will correct me on this.

Darren, I have some docs from the FC which allow you to work it out, I'll see if I can sort them out for you.

OK, found it - it says for example that mid diameter 15cm tree, 6m tall - takes 47 of them to get 5 cubic metres, wait a day and I'll post it for you soemwhere.

cheers James.

Because I start felling in early September that should give me a allowance of 15 cubic metres by the end of March.

The Spruce are about 100mm to 200mm at chest height. I'm not thinning because i tried that and the rest blew over leaving me with a dangerous mess to sort out. It's a clay and wet site and the trees have only a small root plate. I'm clear felling, leaving the rest together so they don't fall over until i start felling again in September. There plenty of thin Ash in amongst them which I'm coppicing as these are tall spindly and flop over when the Spruce are removed.

I wouldn't call it rival! I want to post pictures and send PM's, and post attachments :-)

Just waiting for the registration email so I can see the file.

It must be easier to calculate the volume when the timber is stacked?
