Thanks for all the replies. Sorry not to have responded back sooner but I've had very dodgey internet access over the last few days - driving me nuts!


In the end I've gone for one of these;

A dairy farming friend recomended it to me - he says he uses it to get his son out of bed to help with the milking at the weekend...

Sorry for hijacking your thread Stephen.


It's a Tirfor T516 1600 kg with I would think at least 25m of wire. I would say it would be great for getting oneself out of trouble but a bit slow for general use in the woods. I think it would be worth saving up to get something on the front of your LandRover.
