If you do ever go down the vintage tool route, I can recommend giving these guys a call, they normally have around fifteen good quality vintage 'hooks at between a tenner and thirty five quid.

Their online shop isn't much cop though :/

Any half decent Wood Fair will usually have a selection of second hand tool vendor's, where you can actually feel them in the hand. (The tool, not the vendor).

+1 for Fiskars

Zenith, i'd suggest you look at volunteer work parties with your local wildlife trust, BTCV, etc. Do some of those and you'll soon learn about hand tools and how to use them (you'd be surprised how many people can't put a bow saw on the ground safely!).

We use billhooks all the time for snedding. It's quicker and more pleasant work than snedding with a chainsaw when it comes to small diameter wood.
The more acute the angle the better it works but the more often it needs sharpening. Sharpen it right back and accept that you will have to hone it often and it will be a pleasure to use.
Bulworthy Project is an experiment in low-impact living and working.

Hello Been to a few fairs in the last weeks with an abundance of old tools

Nice looking Fiskar but feel an old but cared for but discarded hook and you will cherish it either for chopping, slashing or splitting as you wish

Let the billhook be with you
