Postby tracy » Tue Feb 03, 2009 10:59 am

The Woodland Skills Centre in North-East Wales runs courses for people who have bought a small woodland, who are hoping to do so or who are just interested in the topic.

Rod says 'We also run craft, building and green wood courses.

The courses are based on the 50 acres of mixed woodland at the Woodland Skills Centre, which is in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Managing a Small Woodland

One Day Course - £40

Saturday 21 February and Saturday 19 September 2009

On this one day course we will look at the 50 acres of Warren Woods as a whole and at several different compartments - coppice with standards, continuous cover, new plantings, conversion of softwood to hardwood etc. The overall management plan will be examined and successes and failures discussed. The course is suitable for people who have recently bought a small woodland or are thinking of buying one and want some pointers to what they might do with it.

Practical Woodland Tasks

One Day Course - £35

Sunday 22 February 2009

This Course can be done on its own or in conjunction with the theoretical course on the day before. We will look at planting, aftercare, pruning and coppice work. We will plant some trees and learn about techniques for planting and aftercare. We will harvest some coppice hazel and look at its uses. We will visit an area of new planting and consider which trees need to be marked as potential standards and how they can be improved by formative pruning and then prune them.'
