Videos: making kindling and making a bench

Postby mikepepler » Wed Apr 16, 2014 7:30 am

Hi All,

Couple of quick how-to videos here, one on making kindling quickly with a froe:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5daBhSvqSc

and one on making a bench using a chainsaw in under 5 mins:

Nothing fancy in either of them, but they are very simple and anybody can do them! :-)

Hi Mike

Nice to see you back with a couple of great videos - interesting, useful and excellent quality. I'll certainly be having a go with your kindling making technique.

What size diameter log do you favour for making the benches?

Hope you have some more videos planned.

Thanks Simon, glad you like the videos! It's been a while since I've been able to make any...

For the benches I'd generally use as large a log as you can find (and carry), to get the height. The one in the video is mainly going ot be used by 7-9 year old kids, so doesn't need to be too high, but it'll be a bit on the low side for adults. You can boost the height a bit though by using larger logs for the 'feet'.

I've got a 'just for fun' GoPro video planned in the woods, but not sure when I'll get to it. (all will be revealed in due course...)

Great videos Mike.

I really like the kindling idea, and I am a definitely a follower of the keeping it simple path.
I have spent many an hour sitting on a bench very much like this one.
Unfortunately my bits are not as supple as they used to be and after a bit you end up with an arse as flat as a pancake

I had a successful go at your 'chainsaw stool' technique. Its easy when you know how :D Great videos. You might want to post a link to the wooden mallet-making video as well.

Ah OK, here's the mallet making video - seeing as you'll need one to hit the froe with!

On a bit of a roll with the videos this week, here's another one, on splitting logs in long lengths (2m in this case): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCsNmr7mqcQ

Here's where the logs end up next, after seasoning:
