What's this fungus?

Postby SimonFisher » Tue Sep 20, 2016 4:00 pm

Can anyone tell me what this fungus is? It's growing on a mature walnut tree, measures maybe 400mm across the largest dimension and around 150mm at its thickest (height). Is it indicative of a decline in the tree's well-being or likely to cause damage to the tree?

I am not an expert but google "bracket fungus" and "heart rot" to see if it could fit. The wikipedia image on heart rot has a very close picture to that of yours
