I wonder how many of you have an oddly named of wood.

We bought ours from Woodlands.co.uk and its called Lapwing wood.

The Ornithologists amongst us will quickly point out that a lapwing is not a woodland bird. We don't have any water either, however it matter not as we love our wood.

Do any of you also have strangely names woods?

Our wood in Wales is called Coed cefn pwll hen.
I call our wood here in Essex "Hundred Acre Wood " as that what it feels like when stand in the middle of it. It is actually just under an acre.

This is a good point you bring up: our woodland has no name apart from that which goes with the house, Sarnau which I believe is latin for paved way or causway and would relate to the footpath that leads past our house. I wonder whether a good name for the wood would be " Phrefrom".

Okay so according to the translator (may his will be so) My wood should be called "coed ar y sarnau" and your wood John is "Woods back the old pool " You can see now why Welsh is the language of the poets it sounds so much better!

Our wood is named Solar Wood so it is trendy ish and in keeping with the sun thing as its quite sunny so that's okay. I think Simon and Margret got it right when they chose the name. We could call it what we want but we like it as it is.

  7. we bought Chick Wood, which is next to a free range chicken farm. We did think of other names for it, such as Ed, and it now has the nickname of Ewar Woowar.

Wouldn't it be better to retain the original name of the wood ? It's not as if you need the postman to deliver there.

If you divide "Broadfarm Wood" into six pieces why not just sell them as parts of Broadfarm Wood ? I guess it's a marketing thing.

Guess I was lucky with Three Springs Wood,
Although from the junk that gets chucked in maybe it should have been Three Car Springs Wood !

  10. I very nearly renamed my Wood Edward Woodwood. My neighbors who live in the wood are Mr and Mrs Wood, My son is called Harvey Tree, so along that vein we are considering changing our names too, Mr jillybean will become Douglas Fir, and I want to be called Holly Tree etc etc

  11. Ours is boring by comparison (Alvecote Wood) although the locals know it as "Piggery Wood" or "The Piggery" as it was used for pig grazing from about 1950 to 1980's.

However we will need a good name for the new bit that we will make in the field we are buying off the adjacent farm. Somehow I don't think "The New Bit" is really poetic enough, although Coed Newydd sounds better...
