Small Woods Association

Sustainability Centre Members Weekend

Nr East Meon, Hampshire.

6.00pm Friday 1 August to 2.00pm Sunday 3 August 2008.

With an exciting programme of speakers and local walks this weekend will provide an opportunity for members in the south of the country to get together to share ideas and problems about their woodlands. SWA has booked the Wetherdown Hostel at the Sustainability Centre, for a residential weekend. The cost will be £60 for members, £80 for non members.  All meals are included, except for Friday night when we will visit the local pub, which has a good range of food available.

The main topic for the weekend will be deer management, and speakers will include Jonathan Rau from Hampshire County Council and Nick Heasman, with an introduction about the Sustainability Centre from Mary Lewis, who has also suggested a venison barbecue on Saturday night. Staff from SWA will also be attending, so please come primed with suggestions for improving our services to you.

The Sustainability Centre is situated on top of the South Downs, three miles south of the picturesque village of East Meon. The Centre is on the South Downs Way and surrounded by a network of footpaths and lanes.  The Centre sits in 55 acres of woodland and natural chalk downland, with several ponds and some open grassland. The Centre has a natural burial ground, and two woodsmen work the woodland, with apprentices from the National Coppice Apprenticeship scheme.

The Wetherdown hostel has been refitted using sustainable building materials and boasts an integrated solar photovoltaic roof and a wood chip biomass boiler.

Please email Phil if you would like a booking form, or to know more about joining the SWA.
