Oct 25 Coppice harvesting efficiency. Part 3.
On the last day of the coppice course, David showed us loads of good tricks using ropes to assist with tree felling. It was much easier than I expected, quicker and safer- not to mention loads of fun pulling huge trees over with no effort!
This was a using a ‘figure of 8′
These straps and carabener were really useful and made attaching to the anchor tree simple.
Using a sheet bend to attach two ropes:
We found that carrying the rope in a bag was much easier and we didn’t get the rope all tangled either. This is Paul…
… and using an extendible pole with a hook makes getting the rope in the tree much easier…
…pull the rope tight…
..and get ready for your cuts. Make sure you are pulling from at least 2 tree lengths away, or use an anchor tree with a pulley. I liked this one, you could do your cuts, and then just pull a rope! Worked great!
This is a system of pulleys that we used with larger trees:
All that’s left is to tidy up the mess we made!
I highly recommend this course, we learnt so much and have found our progress in the wood greatly increased. If you would like to read more about it and see some videos, take a look at our blog
